Just asking.........

Doesn't it seem kinda silly posting someone's public IP address?  That's why it's called a "public IP address".  While I can appreciate some moderation, I think people are turned off from using it based on making "shit posts".  Hence a dead site.  But I don't think they have fear of their IP address being posted.  Why not just ban them after warning?

This was done, because people were either abusing the site's features or posting porn avatars. I would ban them and they would make a new account, so after dealing with this shit for a month I decided the only way to stop this is give them a bit of fear. These people are not banned because of shit posting, you can do that all you want.

isnt this like.. illegal? xD

An IP address alone is not illegal as it is not classed as personal information. If you combine that IP address with personally identifiable information than you are on stickier ground as puiblishing individuals data without consent could break data protection laws in various countries.

Here's the thing, and I need to credit the obsessives in GW2 for me learning about this: Anyone can spoof an IP.

You listing IPs is nothing. It does nothing. Most people these days use VPNs ... heck if you check me out I'm in Switzerland. But I'm not really in Switzerland.

What you are offering is fodder for people to spoof IPs and impersonate people.

I went through this before, and frankly it both disappointed me that longterm friends would be so easy to buy into the bullshit; but it also forced me to learn about protocols and IPs and DNS, and subsequently made me smarter. And you posting the IPs and offering asshats the ability to spoof those IPs is proof why I was concerned about you taking over this site.

So while I understand you're using it as a means to control crappy behaviour, know that most people out there use VPNs and don't care if you post their IPs.

And much like Vyx mentioned previously -- it becomes a big game of whack a mole.

Good luck.

Yes, listen to her.  I can verify that she knows all about being "obsessive"  because of her one same IP address tied to multiple accounts.  "RET, BT and ZH (or is it ZL?) are possibly hitting TCBL tonight."  Good times.

I seem to be late for the party and by no means I'm a lawyer but when it comes to EU, here's a food for thought https://www.whitecase.com/publications/alert/court-confirms-ip-addresses-are-personal-data-some-cases

It sucks to deal with morons but the solution is still poor, not to mention proxies. Today you post someones IP, tomorrow someone will dox you because you are sort of inciting it this kind of practices. There are all kind of people.
